March is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month: a great time to remind ourselves of the many everyday household items that can pose serious risk to our pets.

Curious personalities and a much smaller body size mean that substances harmless to humans can be extremely dangerous, even life-threatening, to our furry friends.

Below are some of the most common household toxins we see in veterinary practice, what signs to watch for, and how to reduce the risk to your pets.

Human Foods

These are some of the most frequent poisonings, particualry in dogs. Common toxic foods include:

  • Chocolate
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Onions, garlic and chives
  • Xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free products)
  • Alcohol and yeast dough

Signs of food toxicity vary depending on the toxin, and may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Collapse
  • Death

Keep food well out of reach, avoid feeding table scraps and always remind children and visitors not to share food with pets!

Medications (Human and Veterinary)

Some high-risk medications include:

  • Paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin
    • Note that paracetamol is HIGHLY toxic to cats and can be fatal in even very small doses
  • Anti-depressants and ADHD medication
  • Cold and flu medications
  • Incorrect dosing of veterinary medications

Things to do to avoid medication toxicity:

  • Never give your pet medication that has not been prescribed by a veterinarian
  • Do not change the dosing of a medication without consulting with a veterinarian first
  • Store medication properly and securely

Cleaning Products

Many household cleaning products can cause poisoning or severe irritation if they come into contact with a pet or are ingested. These include:

  • Bleach and disinfectants
  • Laundry detergents and pods
  • Oven, drain and toilet cleaners
  • Essential oils, diffusers and concentrated oils

Exposure may occur through licking paws, grooming fur, or direct ingestion.

Signs may include:

  • Drooling
  • Oral burns
  • Vomiting
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Skin irritation

Please use pet-safe products where possible and keep pets away from freshly cleaned areas until dry.

Plants

Many popular indoor and outdoor plants are toxic to pets. Cats are especially sensitive!

Some toxic plants include:

  • Lilies
    • These are extremely toxic to cats. Even pollen exposure or drinking from the water they are kept in can be fatal.
  • Sagopalm
  • Aloe Vera
  • Tulips
  • Dumbcane
  • Desert Rose

Always check a plant’s safety before bringing new plants into your home, and consider pet-friendly alternatives.

Pesticides, Baits and Rodenticides

These products are designed to kill insects and rodents, and they can also be extremely dangerous to pets. These include:

  • Rat and mouse baits
  • Snail and slug pellets
  • Insect baits
  • Flea and tick products used incorrectly

What to do if you think your pet has been poisoned

1.    Seek veterinary attention immediately

2.    Do not induce vomiting yourself

3.    Bring the product packaging, or an image of it, with you if possible

Prevention is the best protection

  • Store all chemicals, medications and food securely
  • Keep rubbish bins pet-proof
  • Be extra careful when there are visitors or children. Let them know about possible toxins for your pets
  • Ask your vet if you are unsure whether something is pet-safe
