What are pet ultrasounds?

A pet ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that allows us to see your pet’s internal organs in real time using sound waves.

An ultrasound gives a moving view of soft tissues, helping us detect fluid, masses, inflammation, or pregnancy.

Images can be captured as stills or video loops and are stored on the patient’s medical records.

It’s often performed with your pet lying comfortably on their side, and most animals tolerate the procedure very well.

Why would a pet ultrasound be needed?

Ultrasound scans are used for investigation, treatment and monitoring many conditions affecting our pets.

Some examples include:

  • A detected heart murmur: Ultrasound measures heart chambers and function to determine if medication is needed, improving your pet’s quality of life.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Helps identify cancers or conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Urinary issues or blood in urine: Assesses bladder stones, growths, and prostates; guides urine sample collection for infection testing.
  • Swollen abdomen: Checks for fluid accumulation and allows sampling if present.
  • Abnormal blood tests (e.g., elevated liver values): Screens for liver tumors, gallstones, and other issues.

What’s involved?

An ultrasound procedure for pets is usually very straightforward and is very similar to a human ultrasound.

Fur and fidgeting can affect ultrasound quality, so we usually mildly sedate pets to keep them calm and relaxed. We shave the area, apply gel, and perform the scan in a quiet, dimly lit room with gentle handling, taking about 15–30 minutes.

FAQs

What if my pet won’t stay still?

A pet ultrasound is a very calm and non-invasive procedure and tolerated exceptionally well by most pets, especially with the help of a mild sedation

Is it safe for senior pets or very young pets?

Yes, ultrasounds are very safe.

How soon will I get the results?

The images are taken in real time. It may take a little while for the vets to review them and take any necessary measurements.

We will discuss our findings with you on the same day. The ultrasound images may be sent to a specialist for their opinion, which may take a few days.

Do I need a referral for a pet ultrasound?

No. If the ultrasound has been recommended by another practice, we will have a consultation with you and your pet beforehand to examine your pet and discuss the condition in detail.  Doing this means we get the most out of the ultrasound and avoid missing anything important.

Will my pet need follow-up care?

If the scan reveals any issues, we’ll create a treatment or monitoring plan tailored to your pet’s needs.
