What is pet microchipping?

Pet microchipping is a simple and essential way to help keep your pet safe in Melbourne.

A microchip is a tiny implant placed just under your pets skin, between their shoulder blades.

It holds a unique ID number linked to your contact details in a national registry.

They are widely used by Melbourne councils, vets, and animal shelters to identify lost pets and reunite them with their families quickly and safely.

The microchipping procedure

At your pet’s microchipping appointment, we will:
  • Confirm if you have a Pet Exchange Register source number (required for dogs and cats born after 1 July 2020 in Victoria).
  • Implant the microchip quickly and safely under the skin between the shoulder blades.
  • Record and register your pet’s unique microchip number.
Pet microchipping can be performed in puppies and kittens from a young age and most breeders time this with the first vaccination at 6–8 weeks of age.

Applying for a source number

In Victoria, if your pet was born after 1 July 2020, you’ll need a source number from the Pet Exchange Register before a microchip can be implanted.
  • This promotes responsible breeding and improves traceability of pets.
  • Required when advertising a pet for sale or adoption.
  • Valid for 12 months, with a $25.20 application/renewal fee.
To apply or learn more, visit the Animal Welfare Victoria Website or speak with our team  and we’ll be happy to help.

How do microchips work?

Microchips are passive RFID (radio-frequency identification) devices. When scanned by a vet or ranger, the chip transmits a unique ID number that links to your contact details in the national registry.

How do I confirm my pet’s microchip number?

Drop into our practice and we’ll scan your pet and check their number. This is particularly important with new pets to ensure their paperwork matches their chip.

How do I check or update my contact details?

We can help confirm which registry your pet’s chip is recorded with. If you know the microchip number, you can also contact the registry directly to update your details.

Do pet microchips expire?

No, pet microchips do not expire. They are designed to last the lifetime of your pet.

Are there any risks or complications?

Complications are rare but can include minor swelling, infection, or hair loss at the injection site. Occasionally, chips may migrate under the skin or fail over time. If you have concerns, our team is here to help.
