What’s involved in a veterinary nurse consultation?

A nurse consultation is booked in the same way that you book with a veterinarian and is an opportunity to seek advice, have minor procedures done or medication administered.

These consultations are ideal when you have concerns but do not necessarily need to see a veterinarian.

FAQs

How much does a veterinary nurse consultation cost?

This varies depending on type of consultation. Weight loss clinics and dental checks are free. Monthly medication that is administered by injection will just incur the cost of the medication.

Our team can advise you of costs when booking your appointment.

Do nurses offer home visits?

Yes, nurses can come to your house for consultations. This is often helpful if travelling with your pet is difficult or for behavioural reasons. There is a home visit charge which can be discussed with you when booking the appointment.

Are nurse consultations suitable for nervous pets?

Nurse consultations can sometimes be beneficial for our nervous pets. We aim to get to know both yourself and your pet and provide the least stressful outcome from their visit. This may include injections outside or in the car, giving lots of treats or just taking things very slow to build trust.

Nurses can generally allocate more time to these consultations and create a bond and a plan for future visits.

Can a veterinary nurse prescribe medications?

No, only a registered veterinarian can prescribe medications. If during a nurse consultation there are concerns that your pet needs further diagnosis and/ or medications we will need to book a consultation with the veterinarian.

Where possible we will try to get you in as soon as possible.

Can my pet see the same veterinary nurse each time?

Yes, just like booking an appointment with the vet, you can request certain nurses to assist you.
