What is professional pet dental care?

A lot of dental hygiene for our dogs and cats can be done at home, but for some even daily dental care isn’t enough to prevent dental disease.

Plaque and tartar buildup can cause gum disease, tooth loss, infection, and even damage to internal organs if bacteria enter the bloodstream.

Professional veterinary dental care includes thorough exams, scaling, polishing, and dental X-rays to assess tooth health.

Under general anaesthesia, we ensure your pet’s comfort while cleaning and, if needed, extracting damaged teeth to prevent pain and infection.

Our pet dental services

We can provide a range of pet dental support including detailed oral exams to professional cleaning and advanced treatments to keep your pet's smile healthy and pain-free.

Dental exams

We evaluate your pet for plaque and tartar, gingivitis, periodontal disease and for fractured or rotten teeth.

We will be able to advise you whether dental treatment is needed under anaesthetic, what to expect and costs involved. If your pet does not need treatment under anaesthetic we can give advice or answer questions on at home dental care.

Scale & polish

Daily soft plaque on pets’ teeth hardens into tartar, which harbors bacteria that can damage and rot the tooth root over time.

Under anaesthetic we use an ultrasonic scaler to gently and thoroughly remove all the tartar from all surfaces of the tooth, and underneath the gum line. In early stages of periodontal disease this can return the tooth to full health.

Tooth extractions

Extractions are necessary when a tooth becomes loose from dental disease, or damaged by trauma.

They are also needed when we find tiny holes in the tooth, which can be very painful. This type of dental disease is most common in cats and extraction is the only treatment.

Dental x rays

During the dental procedure, we will take full mouth dental x-rays with our veterinary-specific dental x-ray machine.

An x-ray can identify problems hidden underneath the gumline, guide treatment, and can be useful for referring back to in future.

Oral care at home

Daily tooth brushing with pet-safe toothpaste is best for dogs and cats, while dental chews, toys, and special diets also help reduce plaque.

Regular mouth checks for bad breath, gum issues, or loose teeth catch problems early.

Our vets can recommend the ideal at-home dental care for your pet.

FAQs

How often should you book your pet in for dental care?

We recommend a dental check every 6-12 months.

How much does pet dental care cost?

Dental treatment under anaesthetic starts from $995. This includes the general anaesthetic, a full dental scale and polish, and dental x-rays.

Additional costs may apply if there is significant tartar build-up or if extractions are required.

We’ll discuss your pet’s dental needs in detail during their initial check-up and provide you with a tailored estimate. However, please note that final costs can only be confirmed once your pet is under anaesthetic and we’ve completed a thorough examination and x-rays to assess the full extent of treatment needed.
