Long Term Medications For Pets in Melbourne
Where pets are family and vet care feels personal
We're here to expertly manage their care and medications every step of the way.

Chronic condition management
Animals can suffer the same long term conditions as people.
Long-term medication is often needed to manage symptoms and keep your pet comfortable, but their needs can change over time.
Our experienced vets will guide you through regular check-ups and help you monitor your pet at home.
By working together, we can adjust medications as needed, considering the seriousness of their condition and potential side effects.
As pets age, treatments may need to be reassessed for safety and suitability, with tests like blood work or scans recommended on an individual basis.
Medication dispensing
If your pet’s medication is working well and a check isn’t due, we can dispense refills as needed.
When you request medication, a vet will review your pet’s records to confirm the correct dosage before dispensing.
If out of stock, we usually order it for next-day delivery (Mon–Fri).
Medication must be prescribed by a vet following legal and professional guidelines, so please allow a few days’ notice to avoid treatment interruptions.

FAQs
Yes, if we have seen your pet within the recommended interval for their medications checks and you are happy that their condition seems stable.
Most conditions and medications have a recommended medication check of 6 months. If the condition is life threatening, it may be more frequent. Some pet medications only need an annual review.
We will try to time these checks with their annual vaccination and health check, meaning they may only have one more additional appointment in the year.
If one of our vets has seen and examined your pet for something unrelated this will also count as a medication check as we will have done a full clinical examination.
Be sure to discuss their medication with us at all appointments so we can keep our records up to date with your assessment of their disease management.
There are a few ways to request your pet’s medication:
- Call us and we’ll take your request over the phone.
- Drop by the clinic to request it in person — just note that we may not be able to prepare it on the spot, so you might need to return to collect it.
- Use our online form to submit your request; it will come through to us via email and we’ll process it as usual. For urgent requests, it’s best to give us a call so we can prioritise it.
Once your request is received, we’ll be in touch if we need to confirm any details or if your pet is due for a check-up. As soon as the medication is ready for collection, we’ll give you a call to let you know.
If your pet is registered with Northside Vets and has been examined by a vet within the appropriate time period for that medication, then yes we can dispense.
Please call us so we can request the medical history and details of the medication from the other vet.
If we have never seen your pet at Northside Vets, or we have seen them but not within an appropriate time period, they are not deemed to be “under our care” and we will not be able to authorise the medication.
While this may be frustrating, adhering to the regulations set out by our governing body is an important part of our professional conduct as veterinary surgeons.
Call us to let us know. We don’t want giving your pet medication to become a daily hassle or source of worry for you, or stressful for them. If it’s becoming a battle, it can lead to missed doses and a breakdown of the bond between you.
Most medications will have an alternative which may be easier to give. We work with a veterinary compounding pharmacy that can make many medications into a flavoured liquid or even an ointment to be absorbed through the skin.
There are some medications that must not be crushed, and some that don’t work if given with food. Reach out to us for advice if you are unsure on the best way to give your pet their medication, and for handy tips on dosing a reluctant patient!
