What's involved in a vet consultation?

When you arrive, we’ll quickly update your details and weigh your dog on our reception room scales - there might even be a treat waiting as a little reward!

During the consultation we’ll discuss your pet’s recent health, any concerns you have and symptoms you’ve noticed.

We will thoroughly examine your pet from nose to tail, check their teeth, listen to their heart, feel for lumps and bumps, look down their ears and more.

We’ll then discuss the problems at hand (if any) and answer any questions you have.

If needed, we will make a plan together for next steps and talk through potential costs involved. Medication and further procedures can be organised at the same time.

Check ups when your pet is unwell

We run by appointment, but we’ll do our best to see you promptly if you’re concerned about your pet.

Our vets will discuss with you the nature of the problem, thoroughly examine your pet and explain the available options.

If you are concerned that your pet is critically unwell, please call ahead if you can so we can prepare for your arrival.

Our nurse or vet will do a quick assessment for life-threatening illness or injury and take your pet straight through to treatment.

Long term disease management

Some of our pets suffer from chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and more. This will often involve regular medication and health checks.

Some pet conditions, and some medications are best managed with periodic blood tests, urine tests and/or imaging such as x-rays and ultrasound.

The frequency of these checks can be between every 3 - 12 months, depending on the nature of the condition, how stable your pet is, and the type of medication.

We will work with you to optimise your pet’s well being and provide support to you as their carer.

When should you book a vet consultation?

When your pet is unwell:

Symptoms such as lethargy, weight loss, changes in breathing, limping or stiffness, change in appetite or thirst can be an indicator that something is wrong.

We will thoroughly examine your pet and talk you through what the causes might be, and how we can help.

When your pet is well:

Regular check ups are a vital part of maintaining health and well being for our animals, in all stages of life.

We recommend a routine health check at least yearly, and twice a year for senior pets or pets that have been prescribed with long term medication.

Do you offer online vet consultations?

We truly believe there’s no substitute for an in-person chat and hands-on check-up.

A physical examination allows us to pick up important health issues that simply can’t be detected via telehealth, e.g. heart murmurs, internal lumps, dental disease, and more.

We understand there are times when coming in isn’t possible. If that’s the case, we’ll always do our best to support you however we can.

What are the vet consultation prices for pets with complex needs?

For more complex cases, we offer extended consultations at $140.

If you think your pet may need extra time with the vet, please let us know when booking so we can allocate the time you need.

Is there a pet consultation available after hours?

Outside our opening hours, please call Advanced Vet Care Kew on (03) 9020 3555 for after-hours veterinary care.

How long is a vet consultation?

A standard consultation lasts around 15 minutes. That said, it’s important to us that you never feel rushed as we’ll always take the time needed to care for your pet properly.

If you think you might need a longer appointment, just let us know when booking, and we’ll be happy to allow extra time.

What should I bring to the appointment?

If we haven’t seen your pet before, bring their vaccination record, details of recent medications or parasite treatments, and, if possible, their full medical history. We can request this from your previous vet if you provide their details.

For symptoms like coughing, limping, or unusual behaviour, a short video can help. If it’s a urinary issue, bring a fresh sample; for dogs, try collecting one on arrival and we can assist if needed.

Please bring dogs on a lead and cats in a basket for safety. If your cat is anxious, we can place you in a quiet room on arrival. Feel free to bring your pet’s favourite treats, and let us know if you will need a longer appointment so we can allow extra time.

Can I be in the room during the vet consultation?

Absolutely!  We want you to be involved!  Some pets behave better for things such as injections and nail trims away from their owners, if this is the case let us know.

What can I do to help my anxious pet at the vet?

For dogs, a short walk and toilet break before the appointment can help them relax. Bring their favourite treats for comfort, and ask about our chill protocol or drop by for a happy visit with cuddles and treats. If your dog is nervous around others, let us know so we can arrange a low-stress visit.

For cats, using Feliway in their carrier about 15 minutes before leaving can ease anxiety. We can also discuss calming meds like gabapentin if needed. Bring treats to soothe your cat, and tell us if they’re especially anxious so we can make their visit as calm as possible.
