What are pet blood and urine tests?

A simple pet blood sample can provide a wealth of information about your pet’s internal systems, including the liver, kidneys, immune system, red and white blood cells, electrolytes, and blood sugar levels.

‍Urine analysis helps detect infections, assess kidney function, monitor diabetes, identify crystals or stones, and check for inflammation or bleeding. It’s also used to track pets on long-term medication or with chronic conditions, often revealing illness before symptoms appear.

Routine blood tests

Regular pet blood tests even when your pet is well will be exceptionally useful for future reference as they age.

Each pet has their own unique baseline or “normal” values.

By establishing these while your pet is well, we can more easily spot subtle changes early on, allowing for earlier detection and intervention if illness develops later in life.

Diagnostic pet blood tests

Blood tests are a simple but powerful tool when your pet is unwell.

With just one sample, we can gather a wide range of information about your pet’s health.

Depending on your pet’s symptoms, we can also check for other issues for amore accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Pre-anaesthetic blood tests

A blood test before an anaesthetic gives us up-to-date information on your pet's overall health.

We hope for normal results but use any findings to tailor anaesthetic care and recovery, sometimes postponing procedures if needed.

All results, normal or not, provide valuable information for your pet’s medical records.

Medication blood tests

Pet blood tests play a key role in monitoring your pet’s health while on long-term medication.

Regular testing helps us detect any early changes in organ function or response to treatment, allowing us to adjust medication doses or types as needed.

The goal is to keep your pet feeling their best, optimising their treatment plan for safety and efficacy.

Routine Pet urine tests

Urine samples can offer valuable insights into your pet’s health, assessing kidney function, detecting signs of diabetes and more.

Many samples can be collected at home using a clean container, and we offer special litter kits for cats to simplify collection.

When more accuracy is needed, urine may be taken directly from the bladder under brief sedation for clearer results.

Why would a pet blood or urine test be needed?

We recommend blood and urine testing:
  • When your pet is showing signs of illness
  • Before surgery or anaesthesia
  • To monitor long-term medications
  • As part of senior pet health checks
  • To establish healthy baseline values when your pet is well

What’s involved?

Taking a blood sample from a cat or dog is usually a quick and simple process and often better tolerated than many owners expect, even in more anxious pets.

A small patch of fur is clipped from the neck or leg, the area is cleaned, and the sample is taken from a vein just under the skin. With calm and gentle handling by our skilled vets and nurses, most pets hardly notice a thing.

FAQs

Do pets need to fast before testing?

Ideally, a blood sample is taken when a pet is fasted. It is not essential, we will discuss this with you at your appointment

Will testing hurt my pet?

Most pets hardly feel a thing. Our veterinary team is highly skilled in gentle handling and distraction techniques as well as proficient blood sampling - together this makes the process quick and easy for all involved.

How often should my pet be tested?

Yearly routine blood tests are really useful to keep your pet happy and healthy into their senior years. One year for a dog or cat equates to several human years and much can change in this time.

If they are unwell, are undergoing anaesthetic or are on long term medication a blood test is often recommended at the time of the check up.

Can you do these tests during a regular check-up?

Yes, usually we will be able to take a blood sample and urine sample within a consultation.

What if results show something is wrong?

Our vets will go through the results in detail with you, and depending on what is wrong discuss options for you and your pet going forward.
