How you can help wildlife this Summer

As the weather gets warmer, our amazing native wildlife willbe showing off their magnificence a lot more! You may see them exploring your garden or stretching their legs or wings outside.

There are simple ways that you, as a pet owner and community member, can help protect the animals that share our environment.

Here’s how you can make a difference this summer:

Leave water out (safely)

Leaving a shallow dish of fresh water for birds, possums, lizards and other local wildlife provides them with a source of hydration. Here are some tips on how you can provide them with a safe source of water:

-      Use a shallow bowl or dish so that small animals don’t drown

-      Place the water in a quiet, shady spot

-      Refresh the water daily

-      If you have pets, place the water in areas where your pet will not be able to disturb wildlife

Keep pets away from wildlife

Cats and dogs are wonderful companions, but they can be dangerous to native wildlife.

Make sure to:

-      Keep cats indoors, especially at dawn and dusk

-      Walk dogs on lead near bushland or wildlife-populated areas

Not only will this benefit wildlife, but it will reduce the risk of snake bites and other wildlife-related injuries.

Check the lawn before gardening

Many animals will shelter in grassy/shaded areas, under cars and outdoor furniture, or in woodpiles/compost bins. Make sure to check for any critters in the area before you start doing things like mowing or trimming.

If you find an animal in distress

Do not try to treat it yourself. Follow these simple rules:

-      Avoid feeding it yourself, as incorrect foods can cause serious harm

-      If it is safe to do so, gently place them in a ventilated box with a towel

-      Keep them quiet and warm

-      Call your local vet or wildlife rescue organisation.

It’s a good idea to save emergency numbers on your phone to save time and stress in the moment!

Be aware of fledglings

Fledglings are young birds that have left the nest but are still dependent on their parents for food and protection. They can often be confused for injured birds as they are seen on the ground, but this is normal as they are learning to fly and their parents are usually nearby watching closely! It’s very important that fledglings are left alone and not interfered with, unless they are clearly injured.

As a rule:

-      Only relocate if they are in immediate danger (e.g. if they are on a busy road) and it is safe for you to do so

-      If you need to relocate them, place them in a safe, sheltered spot close to where you find it

-      Do not feed them

You can care for local wildlife with these simple, thoughtful actions. Australia is home to some of the world’s most unique animals and we can each make their lives a little safer this summer.
