Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that has become much more common in Australia, especially in urban areas. At Northside vets, we endeavour to keep you well-informed to make sure that your pets stay protected and safe! Leptospirosis is completely preventable, however if not protected against, it can be fatal.
Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which thrive in warm, wet environments. Dogs can become infected through contact with contaminated water, soil, or urine of infected animals. Dogs can also be infected if they eat infected rodents. Leptospirosis is also zoonotic, meaning it can be spread from dogs to humans. Protecting your dog also helps protect your family.
Symptoms of Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis can look like many other diseases, which is why early detection and treatment is crucial. Symptoms can include:
· Fever
· Lethargy
· Inappetence
· Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
· Increased thirst (polydipsia)
· Increased urination (polyuria)
· Jaundice (yellow gums, whites of eyes, skin)
· Muscle pain or stiffness
· Abdominal pain
· Bleeding or bruising
· Kidney or liver failure
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis of leptospirosis is achieved with blood and urine tests. Early treatment with antibiotics can improve outcomes, however severe cases may require extensive treatment (hospitalisation, IV fluids, and supportive care). Even with treatment, the disease can be fatal. Prevention is key.
Prevention
A safe and effect vaccination for leptospirosis is available and strongly recommended. This can be given at the same time as your dog’s other vaccinations.
Other ways to prevent leptospirosis include:
· Avoiding stagnant water
· Controlling rodents
· Practicing good hygiene when handling your dog
